Climbing the Rwenzori is one of the most rewarding activities once in the wild. The park has Africa's third-highest mountain peak with many waterfalls, lakes, and glaciers. It is known for its beautiful plant life and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its outstanding natural beauty.
It lies along Uganda's border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and borders the DRC's Virunga National Park; The Park is 120 kilometers (75 m) long and 48 kilometers (30 mi) wide. Those mountains are higher than the Alps and are ice-capped. Mount Stanley is located in the park. Margherita Peak, one of Mount Stanley's twin summits, is Africa's third-highest peak with a height of 5,109 meters (16,762 ft). Africa's fourth and fifth highest peaks (Mount Speke and Mount Baker) are also located in the Rwenzori mountain park. It is one of Africa's most beautiful mountain areas. During this part of the trip, you may be able to see Chimps, Black and White Colobus monkeys, elephants, Blue monkeys, and the brilliantly colored Rwenzori Touraco (a bird of the tree tops).
The Rwenzoris support an array of rare and endemic wildlife, stunning glaciers, beautiful waterfalls, rivers and lakes. Basing on the breathtaking beauty and block-type formation, the Rwenzori were ranked the best in Africa and ninth in the world for mountain climbing and hiking adventures. There are several trails travelers can take for exciting treks into the mountain. The shortest and historic trail to the peak, called the Central Circuit, is 7 days (6 nights) and includes the chance to climb to the highest peak of Margherita for those who can manage. There are other shorter, trails that offer easier treks such as the 1 day Nyabitaba nature hike and 2 days 1 night, if you sleep there, 3 days Mahoma loop.
